The Olmec civilization preceded the Mayan civilization. Both lived in the Yucatán Peninsula from southern Mexico to Guatemala and Belize. The Mayans advanced in Mathmatics (the written concept for zero); Astronomy (the Mayan cyclical calendar of 50,000 years); and Science (to more accurately predict a Solar year using the Moon and Venus). They lived for thousand years with an advanced society (populations exceeding 100,000), development of an elite upper class, advancements in raised field agriculture, equitable trade for goods in neighboring nations, and ritual sacrificial games. The Mayans died in 950 CE, probably from internal strife more than from conflict. Hope that helps!
