Answer: 87 dogs

substitue 254 in the equation y=3x-5.

This equals 254=3x-5. You add 5 to 254, which equals 259=3x. Then divide 3 to find out x. The answer is 86.3, but since the graph shows that it is discrete you round getting 87.

Answer:

87 dogs

Explanation:

You want to know the number of dogs (x) that must be walked to raise $254 if the profit from walking x dogs is y = 3x -5.

Solution

Substituting $254 for the profit value in the equation, we have ...

254 = 3x -5

259 = 3x . . . . . . . add 5

86 1/3 = x . . . . . . . divide by 3

To realize a profit of more than $254, more than 86 1/3 dogs must be walked. The smallest integer greater than 86 1/3 is 87.

The friends need to walk 87 dogs to have enough money.
