Explanation:
16 + x = 12
16 - 16 + x = 12 - 16

First step: subtract 16 from both sides to get x=12-16
Second step: simplify to x= -4
Third step: fill it back into the equation to check, 16 + -4 = 12, and 12=12 this is a true statement
