Slavery was not new in New England colony as it has been practiced in Europe for over a century before the colonies came into existence.

The first slaves arrived in Virginia in 1619, and there was nothing new about it but start of slave trade between North America and Africa on the standards of Europe.

Slavery grew in South because it had widespread agriculture and large scale plantations that depended on slave labor to keep up the production. Slaves provided labor on tobacco plantations and rice farms. While in south slaves were attached to small farms, businesses and households.

The slaves in new England learned crafts and specialized skills due to its diverse economy. They used to work alongside, tradesmen, doctors, ministers and were often forced in heavy farm labor. In south women used to work in farms whiles in New England they used to serve as household servants.
