A box that has a width of 5 inches and a length of 12 inches is used to ship a part. The part lies along the diagonal of the bottom of the box. What is the longest possible length of the part?

13 inches

Explanation:

Draw a square and draw a diagonal line through it. It creates a right triangle. So we can then use the Pythagoras theorem to find the length of the object at it's max. so we do a^2+b^2=c^2. So we do (12*12) + (5*5) = 169 and the square root of 169 is 13.
