  1. Find the area of the middle square: 2 * 2 = 4
  2. Find the area of the triangle using A = 1/2*B*H, so A = 1/2 * 2 * 2 = 2
  3. Since there are 4 triangles, the surface area of all the triangles is 2 * 4 = 8
  4. Add the surface area of the triangles with the surface area of the square to get the total surface area: 8 + 4 = 12
