Omar has four times as many apples as bananas. He has 30 pieces of fruit in all. If a represents the number of apples and b represents the number of bananas, how many of each fruit does Omar have? Use the table to answer the question

Explanation:

If Omar has 4 times as many apples as bananas: then if a is the number of apples and b is the number of bananas, then:

Let's say there are b bananas

Therefore there must be 4b apples

In total that gives 5b fruit.

Therefore since there are 30 fruit in all:

5b = 30

Therefore, b = 6

And since there are 30 fruit overall, 30 - 6 = 24

So there 24 apples overall and 6 bananas.
