Work Shown:

sin(angle) = opposite/hypotenuse

sin(40) = 24/x

x*sin(40) = 24

x = 24/sin(40)

x = 37.33737184465

x = 37.3

When you use your calculator, make sure it is in degree mode. One way to check is to compute something like sin(30) and you should get 0.5
