The first thing we want here is the area of the shaded region. This portion can be divided into a rectangle and a trapezoid - considering we are given that the angles in the figure that appear to be right angles, are right angles.

Now this " rectangle " as I mentioned in the shaded region, has dimensions 2 by 8 feet. Respectively the trapezoid has the following dimensions -

Base 1 ( given ) 1 foot,

Base 2 = ( 8 - 2 - 2 ) feet = 4 feet,

Height = 8 + 2 feet = 10 feet

Let's calculate the area of each, adding to form the area of the shaded region, as we are asked to find -

Rectangle Area = 8 feet
* 2 feet = 16 square feet,

Trapezoid Area = ( ( 1 foot + 4 feet ) / 2 )
* 10 feet = ( 5 feet / 2 )
* 10 feet

= ( 2.5 feet )
* 10 feet = 25 square feet

Area of the shaded region = 16 + 25 = 41 square feet

And to determine the area of the non - shaded region, the simplest approach would be the subtract the area of the outer rectangle, with dimensions being 16 by 8 feet, by the area of the shaded region -

Area of " Outer " Rectangle = 16 feet
* 8 feet = 128 square feet,

Area of Non - Shaded Region = 128 - 41 = 87 square feet
