Two functions f and g are defined on set R of real numbers by:

f: x

x2 – 2x – 1

g: x

x – 1

find the value of x for which f(x) = g(x) – 2

Answer:

x = 1, x = 2

Explanation:

Given

f(x) = g(x) - 1, that is

x² - 2x - 1 = x - 1 - 2

x² - 2x - 1 = x - 3 ( subtract x - 3 from both sides )

x² - 3x + 2 = 0 ← in standard form

(x - 2)(x - 1) = 0 ← in factored form

Equate each factor to zero and solve for x

x - 1 = 0 ⇒ x = 1

x - 2 = 0 ⇒ x = 2
