Length = 3w - 2 in

Perimeter of rectangle = 36 inches

2* (length + width ) = 36

2*(3w -2 + w) = 36

2* (4w -2 ) = 36

2*4w - 2*2 = 36

8w - 4 = 36

Add 4 to both sides

8w - 4 + 4 = 36 +4

8w = 40

Divide both sides by 8

8w/8 = 40/8

w = 5

Width = 5 in
