You're playing Scrabble and currently in the letter bag there are 4 "A" tiles, 3 "E" tiles, 6 "R" tiles, and 8 "S" tiles. If your opponent pulls an "R" out of the bag, what is the probability that the next letter picked from the bag will be a vowel?

Answer:

35%

Explanation:

Vowels constitute of the following letters: (A , E , I , O , U)

Out of the following tiles, take note of the vowel ones:

1) There are 4 "A" tiles

2) There are 3 "E" tiles

Another thing to note is that your opponent drew an "R" out of the bag. There will be one less R inside the letter bag:

There were 6 "R" tiles in all previously:

6 - 1 = 5

3) There are 5 "R" tiles.

The number of "S" tiles remain the same:

4) There are 8 "S" tiles.

First, solve for the total amount of vowels by combining the total amount of "A" & "E" tiles:

4 + 3 = 7

There are 7 vowel's in total.

Next, Find the total amount of tiles there are in all (vowels and consonants):

4 + 3 + 5 + 8 = 7 + 13 = 20

There are 20 tiles in all.

Divide the number of vowels gotten from the total amount:

7/20 = 0.35

To solve for percentage, move the decimal point to the right two place values and add the percentage sign:

0.35 = 35%

Your probability of getting a vowel is 0.35 or 35%.
