Think about it let's say the runners dashed the first 5-10 miles as fast as they can, just imagine how tired they would be. They might faint or something else that might make the runners have to stop running the marathon. If the runners ran the marathon at more of a jogging pace, it's less likely for them to faint making it more likely for the runners to finish the race!
