What's the role of oxygen in cellular respiration?

ОА.
It accepts electrons and keeps the electron transport chain running.
OB.
It breaks down carbon-based sugar molecules to release energy and forms carbon dioxide.
O c.
It combines with hydrogen ions in sugar molecules to release energy and form water.
It supplies electrons to the electron transport chain to keep it running.

The correct answer is A. The oxygen molecule accepts electrons from a compound called cytochrome a3. Cytochromes contain a central Iron atom that can either be in the oxidised state(ferric state) Fe3+ or reduced state(ferris state) Fe2+. The cytochrome is oxidized by giving the electron to O2(O2 is reduced).O2 becomes 2O- that quickly react with H+ to form H2O.
