John has some 37-cent stamps and 1-cent stamps in his pocket. The total value

of the stamps is $6.54. If he has eight more 1-cent stamps than 37-stamps,
then how many of each does he have in his pocket?

He has 17 37-cent stamps and 27 1-cent stamps.

Explanation:

37=x

1=x+8

Convert 6.54 to 654 so it's in cents instead of dollars and cents.

37x+1(x+8)=654

37x+x+8=654

38x=654-8

38x=646

x=17

So there are 17 37-cent stamps

17+8=25

So there are 25 1-cent stamps
