Answer:

x² - 4x - 9 = 29

x² - 4x - 9 - 29 = 0

x² - 4x - 38 = 0

Using the quadratic formula

x = \frac{ - b± \sqrt{ {b}^(2) - 4ac } }{2a}

Where

a = 1 , b = -4 c = - 38

So we have

x = \frac{ - - 4± \sqrt{ { - 4}^(2) - 4(1)( - 38)} }{2(1)} \\ \\ x = (4± √(16 +152 ) )/(2) \\ \\ x = (4± √(168) )/( 2) \\ \\ x =2 ± √(42) \\ \\ \\ x = 2 + √(42) \: \: \: or \: \: \: x = 2 - √(42)

Hope this helps you
