Explanation:

Angle of elevation = α = 47 degrees

Height of the church = opposite = 31 m

Distance from point to the church = adjacent = x

So,

Tan α =
(opposite)/(adjacent)

Tan (47) = 31/x

=> 1.07 = 31/x

=> x = 31/1.07

=> x = 28.91 m (Upto 2 dps)
