The Jews were accused of causing the plague mostly because of the general feeling of antisemitism in Europe at that time. They were accused of poisoning food, wells and streams. This happened because, due to their own strict rules of higene and living isolated from others in ghettos, the Jewish communities were less affected by the plague.

The medieval Jewish prosecution eradicated almost entirely the principal communities of Jews in Europe and caused a mass migration.
