Lorraine fills a rectangular prism vase with height h centimeters of water. Two days later, the water level dropped 3 centimeters. If the length of the base is 5 centimeters and the width of the base is 5 centimeters, what is (1) the volume of the water in the vase at the start, (2) volume of water taken out, and (3) the new volume of water in the base?

Answer:

(1) V = 25h cm^2

(2) V = 75 cm^3

(3) V = 25h cm^2 - 75 cm^3

Explanation:

(1)

V = Bh

where B = area of the base, and h = height

B = LW = 5 cm * 5 cm = 25 cm^2

V = 25h cm^2

(2)

V = B(3 cm)

= 25 cm^2 * 3 cm

V = 75 cm^3

(3)

V = Bh

V = 25 cm^2 * (h - 3 cm)

V = 25h cm^2 - 75 cm^3
