A photo is 10 cm long. It is enlarged so that all dimensions are increased by 20%. What is the ratio of the area of the enlarged photo to the area of the original photo?

Let the shape of the photo be square shaped. All the sides of a square are equal.

If the photo is 10 cm long initially, the area of the photo before enlargement will be expressed as

A1 = Length * Length

A1 = 10 * 10

A1 = 100 cm²

If the photo is enlarged so that all dimensions are increased by 20%, then increment in length = 20% of 10 cm

= 20/100 * 10

= 0.2 * 10

= 2 cm

Length of the photo after enlargement = 10 cm + 2 cm = 12 cm

Area of the enlarged photo A2 = 12 * 12 = 144 cm²

The ratio of the area of the enlarged photo to the area of the original photo = A2/A1 = 144/100

= 72/50

= 36/25
