You are hiking and come to a ledge overlooking a small canyon with a sheer, vertical rock face across the canyon. You clap your hands once, loudly and 2.18 seconds later you hear the echo. If the air temperature is 100.13 degrees Fahrenheit, how far from you is the wall of the canyon? Enter a number of meters in the format ### with no decimal point.

Answer:

374m

Explanation:

Using the relationship formula 2x = vt to determine how far from you is the wall of the canyon, where;

x = distance between the source and the reflector

v = velocity of sound in air

t = time of echo

Given t = 2.18secs, v = 343m/s, x = ?

From the formula above; x = vt/2

x = 343*2.18/2

x = 373.87m

x = 374m to the nearest metres

This means that you are 374 m away from the wall of the canyon
