5. A tin has a square base whose sides measures 32cm. the vertical sides are 50cm high. Cake mixture is

poured into the tin and leveled off at the 38cm mark above the base.
Find:
i. Surface area of the tin

Answer:

Tin with open top = 7424 sq.cm.

Tin with a closed top = 8448 sq. cm.

Explanation:

Assuming the tin is open at the top.

The outside surface area of the tin is not dependent on the level of cake mixture.

Base area = 32^2 sq. cm = 1024 sq.cm

4 sides faces, each of

side area = 32*50 = 1600 sq. cm.

Total surface area of tin (excluding top)

= base area + 4 side area

= 1024 + 4*1600 sq. cm

=7424 sq. cm.

If there is a cover and the area is to be included,

total surface area including cover

= base area + top area + side areas

= 1024 + 4*1600 + 1024 sq.cm

= 8448 sq. cm.
