(b)/(2a)

y = - 4x² - 16x - 12 ← is in standard form

with a = - 4 and b = - 16 , thus


x_(vertex) = -
(-16)/(-8) = - 2

Substitute x = - 2 into y for corresponding y- coordinate

y = - 4(- 2)² - 16(- 2) - 12 = - 16 + 32 - 12 = 4
