A tip of lotus was 16cm above the surface of water but forced by the wind, it gradually advanced and was submered at a distance of 56cm. find the depth of water? Ans; 90cm [plz provide detail process]

Answer:

90 cm is submerged (depth of water)

Explanation:

Refer to diagram attached.

Let

x = total length of the lotus stem

16 = exposed part of stem

56 = horizontal displacement.

Hence

depth of water = x-16

Using the Pythagorean theorem,

(x-16)^2 + 56^2 = x^2

Expand

x^2 -32x + 256 +3136 = x^2

Simplify

3392 = 32x

x = 3392/32 = 106

Depth of water = x-16 = 106 - 16 = 90 cm
