Ariel bought nuts at the grocery store to make trail mix for her nature club. She spent a total of $23.50 on almonds and cashews. She bought 1.5 pounds of almonds at $6.50 per pound. If cashews cost $5.50 per pound, how many pounds of cashews did she buy?

Answer:

2.5 pounds of cashews

Explanation:

First, we have to find out how much money she spent on almonds. To do this we must multiply how many pounds she got by the price per pound. This means we multiply $6.5 by 1.5, which equals $9.75. Now we have to subtract this from the total amount she spent to find how much she spent on cashews. Since $23.50-$9.75=$13.75, she spent $13.75 on cashews. Now all we have to do is divide this by how much it cost per pound to find out how many pounds she bought. Since 13.75/5.5=2.5, she bought 2.5 pounds of cashews.

Answer:

2.5 pounds of cashews.

Explanation:

Let's say we have a for pounds of almonds and c for pounds of cashews.

6.5a + 5.5c = 23.5

6.5 * 1.5 + 5.5c = 23.5

9.75 + 5.5c = 23.5

5.5c = 13.75

c = 2.5

So, Ariel bought 2.5 pounds of cashews.

Hope this helps!
