John and 4 friends are going out for pizza for lunch . They split one pizza and 5 large drinks. The pizza cost $10.00. After using a $4.00 gift certificate, they spend a total of $13.50. Write an equation to model the situation, and find the cost of one large drink.

Answer:

The cost of one large drink is $1.50.

(13.5-10) + 4 = (7.5 ÷ 5) = $1.50

Explanation:

The first step is to minus the $10.00 from the $13.50, which gives us $3.50.

13.5 - 10

We've done this because the pizza is irrelevant to what we're trying to figure out, so we subtract the price of the food, which as we already know is $10, to isolate the price of the 5 drinks to make it easier to find the price of just one.

Once we've done that, we're going to add on the $4.00 they got discounted to the $3.50 in order to find the original price of the drinks without using the gift certificate.

(13.5 - 10) + 4

This gives us $7.50, or the price of 5 large drinks. But we're only looking for the price of one. So we're going to divide the 7.50 by the total number of drinks ordered.

(13.5-10) + 4 = (7.5 ÷ 5)

This gives us 1.5, or $1.50.

(13.5-10) + 4 = (7.5 ÷ 5) = $1.50

Hope this was helpful!
