Translate into an algebraic expressions: a x is increased by 50% and decreased by 30% . What is the result?

21x/20 or can be written as x + x/20 .

Explanation:

The number is x

step 1

x is increased by 50%

value of 50% of x = 50/100 *x = x/2

New value after this change = x + 50% increase = x + x/2 = 3x/2

Step 2 The value obtained is decreased by 30%

value of 30% newly found number is = 30% of value found in step 1

value of 30% newly found number is = 30/100 * 3x/2 = 9x/20

This value (9x/2) is subtracted from value found in step 1(3x/2) as given that value obtained is decreased by 30%

new value found after 30% decrease = 3x/2 - 9x/20 = (3x*10 -9x)/20

new value found after 30% decrease = (30x-9x)/20 = 21x/20

Thus, the result of x is increased by 50% and decreased by 30% is 21x/20 = x + x/20
