Tia owns a fruit shop and is selling a fresh lot of apples and oranges. She wants the ratio of apples to oranges sold to be 4 to 2. Tia wants to sell a total of 54 apples and oranges. How many apples should she sell?

Explanation:

Find the value of the multiplier, p, that makes 4a + 2a = 54: a turns out to be 9. Then 4(9) + 2(9) = 54 is correct. Tia should sell 4(9), or 36, apples and half as many oranges, or 18. Note that 36 + 18 + 54.
