The sum of six times a number y and another number x is -62. The difference of x and y (in that order), is 15. What is the value of y?

The first statement is written as

6y + x = -62.......... equation 1

The second statement is written as

x - y = 15 ........ equation 2

To find y make x the subject in the second equation and substitute it into the first equation

That's

x = 15 + y

6y + x = - 62

6y + 15 + y = -62

7y = -62 - 15

7y = - 77

Divide both sides by 7

y = - 11
