Following the hostilities and tension about the betrayal by the Americans, Chief Joseph décided to retreat with his men and families and they braced impossible odds, fighting with only 200 fighting men against up to 2,000 Americans on their quest to cross to Canada.

After a long, hard battle which had taken its toll, Chief Joseph decided to surrender and he gave this speech:
