you want to put the variables on one side and the numbers on the other

x−5=11−3x

+3x +3x

4x-5=11

+5 +5

4x=16

÷4 ÷4

x=4

Group all the constants at one side

That's

x + 3x =11 + 5

4x = 16

Divide both sides by 4

4x/4 = 16/4

x = 4
