The subject of the story is a conflict over land between the two main characters, Georg Znaeym and Ulrich von Gradwitz, and their families. The author describes how there was a lawsuit over the land, but that the losing family was not satisfied with the decision.

One of the central themes of the story is that nature is indifferent to humans. For example, the author shows that the feud between the two men surrounds the ownership of the forest they are both in. However, when they do come face to face in the story, a tree falls on them, trapping them both underneath.

The author also develops this theme by implying that while both Znaeym and Gradwitz call out for their men, they are instead found by wolves.
