Carter Ian and Jaden walked at a speed of 36 m/min, 42 m/min, and 48 m/min respectively. Carter and Ian started walking from village x to village y at the same time while Jaden walked from Village y to village x. Jaden passed carter 10 minutes after passing Ian. Answer:

12.6 km

Explanation:

Two people going towards each other meet at the time:

t = d/(v1+v2)

where:

  • d is the distance between the people (here, the distance between the villages)
  • v1 and v2 are the velocities of each person.

When Ian and Jaden meet:

t1 = d/(42+48) (d is in meters and t is minutes)

When Carter and Jaden meet:

t2 = d/(36+48)

Jaden passed carter 10 minutes after passing Ian, therefore:

t2 - t1 = d/84 - d/90 = 10

6d/7560 = 10

d = 10*7560/6

d = 12600 m = 12.6 km
