A rectangle is eight inch long and its diagonal is ten inches. What's the width of the rectangle?

the answer is 6 inches

Explanation:

To find the diagonal we use the Pythagorean Theorem:

l² + w² = d² where the is d hypotenuse

8² + w² = 10²

64 + w² = 100

w² = 100 - 64

w² = 36

w = √36

w = 6

therefore the width of the rectangle is 6 inches

\sqrt{length^(2) + width^(2) }

10 =
\sqrt{8^(2) + width^(2) }

10 =
\sqrt{64 + width^(2) }

100 = 64 +
width^(2)


width^(2)\\ = 100 - 64


width^(2) = 36

width =
√(36)

width = 6 inches
