First you have to convert 2-gallon into cups for you to have the same measurement units.

2 gallons will give you 32 cups.

Now we know that the teacher has 32 two cups and is giving a half of a cup to students.

We could now write the equation as

y = 32 - 1/2x or y= - 1/2x + 32
