The ratio of the number of cars Ed has to the number of cars Pete has was 5:2 at first. After Ed gave 30 cars to Pete, they had an equal amount of cars each. How many cars did they have altogether?

5x=5(20)=20 for Ed

2x=2(20)=40 for pete

together they had 140 cars

Explanation:

5:2 is the ratio

5x-30=2x+30 tat when Ed gave Pete 30 cars

solve for x

5x-2x=30+30

3x=60

x=20

substitute for x: 5x=5(20)=20 for ED

2x=2(20)=40 for pete
