Katherine has two types of iodine in her lab. She has brand 232 iodine, which costs thirty-six cents

per ounce. She also has brand 880 iodine, which costs $2.04 an ounce. How many ounces of each should she use if she wants to make three hundred ninety-three ounces of iodine that cost a total of $255.72?

Given the following ;

Brand 232:

Cost per ounce = 36cent

Brand 880:

Cost per ounce = $2.04 = 204cent

Assume the following :

Number of ounces of 232 brand = x

Number of ounces of 888 brand = y

Total ounces to be made :

x + y = 393 - - - (1)

Total cost of iodine :

Brand 232 = 36x

Brand 888 = 204y

36x + 204y = 25572 - - - - (2)

From (1)

x = 393 - y - - - - (3)

Substitute (3) into (2)

36(393 - y) + 204y = 25572

14148 - 36y + 204y = 25572

-36y + 204y = 25572 - 14148

168y = 11424

y = 11424 / 168

y = 68

From ; x = 393 - y

y = 68

x = 393 - 68

x = 325

Number of ounces of iodine 888 brand = 68

Number of ounces of iodine 232 brand = 325
