They act as site for the synthesis of protien in both prokaryotes as well as eukaryotes.

mRNA (messenger RNA) arrives at ribosome after it gets transcribed from DNA.

mRNA gets converted to particular protein (through assembly of amino acids that are carried by specific tRNA molecules according to codons in the mRNA) that is needed by the cell.

This process is known as translation and it takes place at the site called ribosome.
