The first time I had to give a presentation in public was utterly terrifying. I have been pretty confident in my linguistic abilities all my life, but I underestimated the power of having an audience. I knew it all; I had it all prepared - my notes, the PowerPoint presentation itself... I had rehearsed again and again at home until that evening finally came. As I stood facing teachers, classmates, and complete strangers, I went blank. It felt as if I had never rehearsed at all, as if I had never even thought about that topic. I struggled with the very beginning - greeting the audience, introducing myself, introducing the topic.
I bet everyone could sense, if not hear and see, how nervous I was. Their faces, however, were peaceful and understanding, as if they could all empathize for having been in the same situation themselves. It took me a few moments to finally start. I tried to keep my head cool, tried to pretend I was back home, in my room, on my own. They had turned off the lights so that people would focus on the projection on the wall - my room had always been bright, though. I found it hard to read my notes. But my brain, I guess I could say, came to rescue. I knew what I knew. Information crept back, tracing the same neuronal path it had multiple times before, finding its way to my tongue. And just like that, I was done, happy and relieved, ready for more.
