In a cookie mix, we find oatmeal cookies,

raisin cookies, and butter cookies in a ratio
of 5:1:3. If a bag of the mix contains 60
butter cookies, how many cookies in total
are there?

Looking at the basic information given we know:

If there are 5 oatmeal cookies, there will be: 1 raisin cookie and 3 butter cookies. This is a base value.

So, we have equations like this:


r = 1/3b and
o = 5/3b

So, if we plug in 60 for butter cookies we will have something like this:


o : r : 60 or
(5/3b) : (1/3b) : b where b=60

Solving:


(5/3b) : (1/3b) : b


(5/3b) : (1/3b) : 60\\100 : 20 : 60

Then add the amounts of together to get 180.
