There were 300 students

Explanation:

Original * 30 = increase

Add the increase to get the new number

original + increase = 308

original + original*30% = 390

Factor out original number

original ( 1+30%) = 390

Change to decimal form

original ( 1+.30) = 390

original ( 1.30) = 390

Divide by 1.3

original = 390/1.3

=300
