Answer: C. Sputnik

This effectively set off the space race between the US and the USSR. There wasn't much on the satellite itself other than a power supply, a radio transmitter, and various cooling equipment. The satellite was merely a proof of concept of sorts, and a means to show political dominance/fear to the opponent. Despite the limited payload, there were some scientific discoveries such as determining the density of the atmosphere at various altitudes.
