$answer = - 30 \\ let \: the \: number \: be \: x \\ 3x + 20 = x - 40 \\ or \: 3x - x = - 40 - 20 \\ or \: 2x = - 60 \\ or \: x = ( - 60)/(2) \\ x = - 30 \\ hope \: it \: helps \\ good \: luck \: on \: your \: assignment$
