$collect \: like \: terms. \\ 8x - 6x = 0 + 2 - 9 \\ 2x = - 7$

$divide \: both \: sides \: of \: the \: equation \: by \: 2 \\ (2x)/(2) = ( - 7)/(2) \\ x = - (7)/(2) or \: x = - 3.5$
