Three advantages the Union had over the Conderates:

  • More population: The union had around 18.5 people, while the Confederacy had around 8.5 million. A higher population meant not only more soldiers, but also a bigger economy.
  • An industrial economy: the Union was industrializing very fast, and many railways were being built. The Confederacy, on the other had, was an agrarian economy. This meant that the Union could put some of the industry to work for the army.
  • Better economy: the Union simply had a better economy than the Confederacy: it was richer. This meant that the Union could sustain the war effort for a longer period of time.
