State five importance of organic matter to the soil.​

1. It provides nutrients for crops as it decomposes and contributes to the cation exchange complex necessary for holding applied nutrients in the soil.
2. Soil aggregation is improved by increased organic matter content and hence has a role in maintaining soil structure, drainage and aeration; all of which are necessary for good crop yields

3. Soil organic matter also plays a role in increasing moisture retention and consequently the drought tolerance of the crop.

4. In addition to providing nutrients and habitat to organisms living in the soil, organic matter also binds soil particles into aggregates and improves the water holding capacity of soil.

5. It produces healthy crops that in turn nourish people
