Work out the area of the circle

By the length of the square, you know the diameter of the circle is 12 cm so the radius is 6cm. Then you can calculate the area of the circle by doing


6^(2)π =36π
cm^(2)

Work out the area of the square

12 x 12 = 144
cm^(2)

So the bit not occupied by the circle will be 144- 36π = 30.888
cm^2

However, the shaded area is just 1/4 of this bit so 30.888 / 4 = 7.722
cm^2
