Trains Two trains, Train A and Train B, weigh a total of 222 tons. Train A is heavier than Train B. The

difference of their weights is 198 tons. What is the weight of each train?
Train A weighs 3 tons.

Firstly, you have to form an simultaneous equation using the information above. Let a = variable of Train A and let b = variable of Train B :


a + b = 222 - - - (1)


a - b = 198 - - - (2)

Next, you have to solve the simultaneous equation by eliminating one variable. I will choose to eliminate a so you have to subtract (2) from (1) :


(1) - (2)


a - a + b - ( - b) = 222 - 198


2b = 24


b = 24 / 2


b = 12

Lastly, you have to substitute b = 12 into any of the equations :


substitute \: \: b = 12 \: into \: (2)


a - 12 = 198


a = 198 + 12


a = 210
