Allen has been asked to replicate a scientific diagram in his notebook. His teacher has told him that variations in lengths of up to 2 centimeters are acceptable. If a test tube is 7 centimeters long in the original diagram, write an equation to help Allen find the maximum and minimum acceptable lengths of the test tube in his diagram. ( let x represent the length of the test tube in the new diagram)

Answer:

| x - 7 |
\leq \\ 2

Explanation:

With the absolute value of x - 7, and an inequality only allowing for the variation to be less than or equal to 2, Allen will know the maximum and minimum lengths if he used the equation.

The minimum would be x = 5, and maximum would be x= 9, and both these numbers will satisfy the equation.
