We need to utilise Pythagoras theorem here. Pythagoras states that the 2 legs of the triangle square equal the hypotenuse squared so the formula for this is a² + b² = c²

In the question we are already presented with the hypotenuse so we will have to substitute in the values and rearrange

→ Form equation

7² + b² = 14²

→ Simplify

49 + b² = 196

→ Minus 49 from both to isolate b²

b² = 147

→ Square root both sides to isolate b

b = 12.12435565

The value of x to 1 decimal place is 12.1
